Each school year at Juniper Ridge Community School begins with a Rose Ceremony. Today, we started by introducing all the teachers that have joined us – and there were a lot! We are really growing!! The new and returning faculty joined together on stage to welcome the school with a song.
The student body then welcomed all the new students 2nd – 9th grade that have joined us this year. Then, after a few words from Mr. Ebel, the new 8th and 9th graders escorted our budding first graders, one by one, to the stage to accept a rose from their new first grade teacher. Music by Mrs. Cooper and Mr. Rizzo played in the background to make it serene and welcoming.
This simple ceremony is celebrated in many Waldorf schools around the world as a marker of an important transition for the children. Entering the grades is something many of the kindergartners have thought a lot about and looked forward to. The young children are entering a new phase in life — where schooling and community, away from parents, will support their budding sense of self, learning and individuality. The older children are entering into young adulthood and are ready to be leaders and guides in their own life and in their community.
After each first grader received their rose, Ms. Rusling treated the student body to a wonderful story before sending all the students on their way to begin their first day of the school year.
This event is a reflection of the beauty, kindness and care given to all students, each year, at JRCS.
